Background & Education:
Susan resides in Kitchener, Ontario and began taking art courses from several local artists beginning in 1997. She began with drawing classes and then went on to painting in oils, acrylics and pastel. Susan also participated in an online art class for two years, where she learned a great deal on composition, design and colour harmony. Although she would be considered a self-taught artist, she attributes her artistic skills to reading countless books and magazines, networking with other artists and analyzing the works of successful artists. She continues to concentrate on representational landscapes in acrylic on canvas, however she also enjoys experimenting with mixed media to create abstracts and contemporary floral designs.
Susan is a member of the Waterloo Community Art Centre (WCAC), a not-for-profit, volunteer-run, charitable organization, that exists to promote all forms of art programs in the community. She has been a member of the Pastel Artists of Canada (PAC) for many years, where she enjoyed the benefits and support this organization offered. Susan is also a member of Kitchener Waterloo Society of Artists (KWSA) whose organization brings together people of all levels of artistic achievement, from emerging artists to professionals.
For three years, she served on the Executive of this society in the following capacities:
May 2005 – May 2006:
Chairperson of the KWSA 75th Anniversary Committee: Responsibilities included organizing KWSA’s participation in a charity art auction put on by Ontario Early Years (YMCA), as well as a Retrospective Gala in March 2006 which was held at The Walper Terrace Hotel in celebration of KWSA’s 75th Anniversary. Over 300 people attended this event, from city dignitaries, to former members and their families; it was a wonderful reunion for many of our life-members (over 25 years of membership).
May 2005 – August 2007
Vice President of KWSA:
For two years, Susan was active as Vice President for KWSA (Kitchener Waterloo Society of Artists). During this tenure, she enjoys giving back to the arts community and to the 100 artists who comprise of this society. She enjoyed supporting the current President, Linda Brubacher, as working with the other executives.
September 2007 – June 2008
President of KWSA
In the Fall of 2007 she assumed the position of President for the term ending in June 2008. One of her accomplishments was working with former member, Judi Peddar, to produce an Artist Bio Album for KWSA where each member would have a one-page bio with their photograph, artist statement and two images of their artwork. This book was presented to the Homer Watson House and Gallery and helped to secure exhibitions for the society in 2008 and 2009.
